Program Description
Word Generation is an approach to vocabulary building in which students are encouraged to discuss and read about topics containing target words of importance, but not already in most students’ vocabulary.
Program Outcomes
One large study in Northeast and Western urban districts evaluated the reading outcomes of Word Generation (beyond learning the target words). Small positive effects in comparison to control groups were found on GMRC comprehension (effect size =+0.07) but not vocabulary (effect size = 0.00).
