Program Description

Math 180® is a targeted math intervention program that builds algebra readiness in core or dedicated intervention classrooms, using research-based strategies for striving students. Its adaptive student application, combined with teacher-facilitated instruction, accelerates students toward grade-level proficiency. Lessons focus on strengthening foundational computation and reasoning skills including operations with whole numbers, fractions, ratios, decimals, proportional reasoning, and functional thinking in order to prepare students for on-grade-level coursework.

Program Outcomes

Two studies, one randomized and one matched, examined the efficacy of Math 180. The first study, conducted in the 2014 to 2015 school year with 6th grade students, randomized three schools in which to implement Math 180 and three schools to continue with their business as usual math instruction. Students receiving Math 180 exhibited greater growth on NWEA MAP mathematics assessments than students in the comparison condition (effect size = +0.31).

The second study, conducted in the 2016 to 2017 school year, used a matched comparison design with students in Grades 5 through 8 who were eligible for intervention. After establishing baseline equivalence, Math 180 students demonstrated significantly greater gains on the NWEA MAP mathematics assessment than comparison students (effect size = +0.23).

Across both studies, results point to positive impacts for Math 180 on student mathematics achievement and support a Moderate evidence rating.

Staffing Requirements

Both studies used a blended model of implementation, which required a dedicated classroom with teacher/paraprofessional for each section. Other Math 180 implementation models such as “Flex” do not require a dedicated classroom.

Professional Development/Training

Teachers received an initial 2-hour to half-day start-up training and an average of 2-3 coaching visits during the year. Training and additional coaching services are available for any Math 180 implementation.

Technology

Most classrooms were equipped with smart boards and students worked on dedicated computer terminals with a 1:1 ratio during a rotation. Since approximately half the class worked independently on the software at any given time, a 2:1 student to computer ratio in the classroom was adequate.
