Let’s Begin with the Letter People is an early literacy approach that emphasizes building language and literacy through play. In addition to literacy, it addresses math, art, music, science, and language.
A study in New York State randomly assigned 35 early childhood classes to Let’s Begin With The Letter People, the Waterford Early Reading Program, or control. In the comparison of Let’s Begin to control, students in Let’s Begin scored significantly higher on measures including Woodcock Johnson and Get Ready to Read scales, averaging an effect size of +0.22. This qualified the program for the ESSA “Strong” category. Let’s Begin was also evaluated in the federal PCER study, where the effect size was only +0.04. The weighted average effect size across the two studies was +0.15.
