Program Description

From Here to There (FH2T) is a digital game designed to strengthen students’ understanding of algebraic expressions and equation solving. Students interact directly with algebraic notation by dragging and transforming expressions using mathematically valid operations.

The program presents a starting expression and a mathematically equivalent target expression. Students manipulate the original expression to match the target form, practicing operations such as distribution, factoring, inverse operations, and order of operations. FH2T is intended for middle and high school students learning introductory prealgebra or algebra and can be used as a supplemental instructional tool to practice important foundational math skills.

Program Outcomes

From Here to There (FH2T) was evaluated in a randomized controlled trial of 1,119 Grade 7 students in 10 middle schools in a large suburban district. Students were randomly assigned within classrooms to FH2T (n = 753) or to an active comparison condition using online algebra problem sets with delayed feedback (n = 366).

Students received nine 30-minute sessions across one academic year. The outcome was a 10-item multiple-choice assessment of algebraic understanding adapted from a previously validated standardized measure.

After adjusting for students’ pretest scores and background characteristics, students who used FH2T scored significantly higher than students in the control group (Hedges’ g = 0.14), earning a Strong evidence rating.

Staffing Requirements

The FH2T game can be used independently by students. Ideally the related GM tools can be integrated into teacher instruction and classroom activities.
